Paul, a 28-year-old refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, had built a stable life in Idaho — working full time, supporting his family, and caring for his newborn son. Yet one dream still felt out of reach: becoming a U.S. citizen. Because of a lifelong speech impediment, Paul often struggled with anxiety and self-doubt, fearing he wouldn’t be understood or taken seriously during the citizenship interview.

Through the compassionate, personalized support of his CCI caseworker, Paul received both legal guidance and emotional encouragement. He learned about available accommodations, practiced communication skills, and gradually rebuilt his confidence. Step by step, he faced his fears and found renewed belief in his own voice.

When the day finally came, Paul completed his interview successfully and became an American citizen. His courage and perseverance opened the door to new opportunities for himself and his family. “Your encouragement made me believe in myself,” he said. “Thank you for helping me achieve my dream of becoming an American citizen.”

Paul’s story reflects the mission of Catholic Charities of Idaho — addressing both practical and emotional needs to help individuals overcome barriers, embrace their dignity, and find belonging, one person at a time.
