Caitlin tells the story of moving from bad choices and chaos, to gaining control of all aspects of her life, thanks to Catholic Charities of Idaho:
Caitlin* was born to a single mother many years ago in a small town in central Idaho. Before she turned ten, her mother let her drink alcohol. By the sixth grade her mother shared marijuana with her, followed a year later by cocaine. When Mom no longer wanted to share her supply of drugs, Caitlin got hooked on methamphetamines. She dropped out before graduating from high school and, by age 37, had a lengthy history of drug and alcohol use, dysfunctional relationships, and criminal behavior. After some serious charges and jail time, she ended up in a homeless shelter. Caitlin was also placed into the family court system because, by this time, she had a young daughter. Once a neglected child, Caitlin was now fighting not just for herself, but also for her own little girl.
At Catholic Charities, we believe in the goodness and wonder of childhood. By providence, Caitlin was referred to us for assistance with school tuition, so she could attend Idaho State University. We helped her with that, and more. Our Financial Wellness Coach helped Caitlin learn skills like money management, budgeting, how to set priorities, work on a schedule, and even how to organize her apartment! |
Caitlin is now clean and sober, has two jobs, has paid off three huge medical bills, and is saving money. She is enrolled at ISU, thanks to our matching grant, studying to become a substance abuse specialist. And she is working with one of our professional counselors to heal from past trauma.
But here’s the real Christmas story: Caitlin is also working to secure custody of and to create a proper home for her daughter, because she knows what a responsible parent needs to do; and because she believes in the goodness of hope.
And nothing – absolutely nothing – is more important than hope.
