“I believe we all have a story and that our emotions make perfect sense given our story. They may not make perfect sense to someone else (because their story is different), but given your family of origin and your experiences, your emotions make perfect sense. Your behavior makes sense too. We all have deep emotional longings to belong, to be accepted and even cherished for who we are. When those longings are not met, we find ways of getting what we need. Not all of this behavior is helpful or healthy, but it works for us on some level, or we wouldn’t do it. Much of the work of counseling is about understanding how your past affects you in the here and now - emotionally, mentally and behaviorally. You will develop a deep trust with your counselor who can help you make sense of your story thus far, and accompany you as you decide what changes you would like to see for your future.” |
